Buck Farmer pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning, as the Detroit Tigers blanked the Los Angeles Angels 4-0 last night. Farmer gave up just three hits. Alex and Justin Wilson completed the shutout. Detroit took an early lead when Ian Kinsler scored on a Victor Martinez double play ball in the third inning. Justin Upton provided some breathing room with a three-run homer in the eighth.
The Tigers wrap up that series with the Angels this afternoon. Michael Fulmer will pitch against JC Ramirez. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Domingo Santana and Jonathan Villar homered, and the Milwaukee Brewers downed the San Francisco Giants 6-3 last night. Jimmy Nelson gave up three runs over six innings, and earned the win. Corey Knebel collected his seventh save.
The Brewers conclude that series against the Giants this afternoon. Paulo Espino will make his second career start for Milwaukee. Johnny Cueto will counter for San Francisco.
Espino was called up from Colorado Springs because Matt Garza has been placed on the disabled list with a chest contusion sustained when he crashed into first baseman Jesús Aguilar during a play at first base during his last start.
Women’s Softball
In last night’s only Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball game, Auto Pro Glass and Tire defeated Mattila Rock and Dock 9-4. Morgan Gast had two hits for Auto Pro. Darla Mensch had a double and a triple for Mattila. Sarah Audette pitched a complete game to get the win for Auto Pro.
Twilight League
In tonight’s only Copper Country Twilight Baseball League game, Dean Kangas-State Farm faces REL at the Stanton Field.
Finlandia
The most accomplished soccer player in Finlandia University history will stay with the university. Alex Freeman was named assistant coach of the men’s and women’s soccer teams yesterday. In 2015, Freeman turned in the best soccer season in Lions history, with 19 goals and five assists.
Border Bash
The Northern Michigan boys romped to a 139-125 victory over the Northern Wisconsin boys at the fourth annual Kiwanis Border Bash basketball game last night. Trent Bell from Negaunee and Jason Whitens from North Central shared Most Valuable Player honors. Local players on the team included Austin Berglund from Ewen-Trout Creek, and Mitchell Borseth from Ontonagon. Brad Besonen from Ewen-Trout Creek coached the squad.
The Northern Wisconsin girls defeated the Northern Michigan girls 95-70. Local players included Bailey Froberg from L’Anse, Carsyn Osterman from Baraga, Tawna Ryynanen from Houghton, and Hailey Wickstrom from Calumet.
Both games were played at Gogebic Community College.
NBA
The Golden State Warriors took a three games to none lead in the NBA championship series last night, with a 118-113 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Game four will be played tomorrow night in Cleveland.
NHL
The Stanley Cup series continues tonight, as the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Nashville Predators. The series is tied at two wins per team.
Horseshoe Tourney
The Copper Country Horseshoe League is hosting a round robin tournament Saturday at the Dreamland Bar on the Bootjack Road. All are invited. Registration opens at 11:00, and competition begins at noon. The entry fee is $10.00 per person. Contact Mike with any questions at 369-1729.
