Aspirus Health plans to take its first steps toward a 30-million-dollar expansion project in Laurium. However, in addition to the expansion Aspirus Health will reduce services at Asprius Ontonagon starting in April.
Asprius Health has begun to invest significant resources into developing the healthcare provider’s space in the region’s market. Part of these resources includes a 30 million dollar renovation project at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital to meet the growing needs of the local community. The project will update the efficiency of existing infrastructure, redesign the inpatient room for a larger and more private layout, increase access to orthopedic care, consolidate services improve patient flow, and improve access to walk-in and same-day primary care.
While improvements are made to the Laurium facility Asprius Health will transition the Ontonagon location into a rural health clinic offering outpatient care to better match community needs. Ending emergency services in the area starting April 20th. After which the Ontonagon team will only provide primary care, same-day access, core lab services, imaging, physical, occupational, and speech therapy, pharmacy services, and specialty outreach for cardiology, women’s health, podiatry, and diabetes care. The health care provider plans to replace the Hospital and emergency services with a robust suite for outpatient-only services. Aspirus Health says that currently the Ontonagon hospital only services an average of one inpatient a day, sometimes none at all.
While the healthcare provider transitions the Ontonagon facility to provide outpatient services, it will work with the location’s team members to find qualified and fitting positions within the provider’s system.
