Area students learn about entrepreneurism

Calumet, L’Anse, and Baraga students were swimming with the sharks on Wednesday at Finlandia University. The School of International Business hosted representatives of the merchant community, including the proprietor of Black Ice Comics, executive director of the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance, and others to judge pitches of various business plans aimed at addressing a health care need.

First place was announced in the Hirvonen Hall auditorium on Finlandia’s campus around 1:00 PM.

So, we have our group from L’Anse; The Cool Kids Club! [Applause]

The L’Anse team presented on a band that would help secure an insulin pump from being damaged in the course of everyday activities.

The thing with this diabetic pump, it is a thing that almost acts as a pancreas that provides you insulin through a tube that connects to your body. One of the downfalls of this is this tube. It can easily get caught on doorknobs and chairs. I even broke one of these diabetic pumps because it fell out of my pocket and got slammed in the door. We came up with a design of something almost as a head band that can go around your waist, your arm, or your leg that holds this diabetic pump.

Students were taken through the entire entrepreneurship process. They were broken into groups and each had a classroom of their own to hone and develop their idea. They had to develop a verbal presentation 90 seconds in length. The first round happened in the classrooms and one group from each district was selected to make a second pitch in front of a large group in the auditorium, including the “big sharks.”

Students fielded questions from the panel before it left the room to deliberate. Baby E’s Bar-B-Que catered a meal for all participants that was eaten in between the presentation rounds.
