Apportionment Commission working under tight timeframe

Following the census, Houghton County is required to go back to the drawing board to remap districts. The Apportionment Commission is made up the County Clerk, Prosecuting Attorney, Treasurer, and the heads of the county chapters of the Republican and Democratic Parties. They have 60 days to complete their work, before residents have the opportunity to submit their own maps. Prosecutor Brittany Bulleit says two of the state’s prominent law firms believe the clock is already ticking.

The problem is is now the county clerks received a legal opinion from Warner Norcross Judd, which is another large firm in the state, that our time started on the 12th.

The group has set a preliminary budget at $5,000, but that can be adjusted if needed. The panel discussed correspondence. Three letters were received against expanding beyond five commissioners. One came in for the idea.

The political party representatives have yet to complete training on the software being used to help create the maps. They will have until September 9th to do so. The group will meet on that date at 4 PM. Late afternoon is expected to be the meeting time going forward.
