Heikinpaiva celebrations must have the community residents involved. Without incredible artwork, fantastic volunteers, and exciting dancers the Finnish cultural festival would not bring a unique atmosphere to Hancock.
In collaboration with Heikinpaiva and in celebration of Kalevala Day the Copper Country Community Arts Center invites artists to create works inspired by the 19th-century poetry epic recounting Finland’s national mythology.
The Kalevala was compiled by Elias Lonnrot from Finnish folklore describing the creation of earth. Lonnrot served as a district health officer while making eleven field trips to record verses over fifteen years. He visited many towns and villages in eastern Finland to complete the work and compile the various versions of the epic into a single cohesive poem.
The Animal Life Art from the Kalevala exhibit with the Copper Country Community Arts Center asks artists to submit works before January 18th. Those interested in participating in the exhibit and have questions should contact Cynthia Cote.
The artwork will be displayed between January 25th and February 28th.
