High School
All of yesterday’s high school baseball and softball games were rained out. We have not received makeup dates for any of them, yet.
On today’s baseball schedule, weather permitting…
– Houghton visits the Gogebic Miners.
– Hancock entertains Jeffers.
– The L’Anse game at Calumet has been postponed – no makeup date has been announced.
The L’Anse Invitational boys golf meet has also been postponed.
The Copper Country Invitational track meet at Calumet has been rescheduled to May 15th.
MLB
Daniel Norris struck out eight over six strong innings, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Cleveland Indians 7-1 last night. Despite some control problems, Norris gave up just one run on five hits. Tyler Collins led the offense with a three-run homer. Victor Martinez had three hits.
The Tigers continue that home set against the Cleveland Indians tonight. Justin Verlander will pitch against Corey Kluber. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
First baseman Miguel Cabrera should be back in the Tigers’ lineup tonight. He’s set to return from the disabled list, after recovering from a groin strain. Outfielder JaCoby Jones is scheduled to play a couple of warm-up games for Toledo tonight and tomorrow, as he prepares to return from the DL. He’s recovering from facial lacerations he sustained when he was hit by a pitch.
Travis Shaw hit a three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning, and the Milwaukee Brewers held on to defeat the Atlanta Braves 7-5 last night. Closer Neftalí Feliz surrendered a leadoff home run to Jedd Gyorko in the bottom of the 10th, but then retired the next three batters to earn the save. Jonathan Villar also homered for Milwaukee.
The Brewers continue that series at St. Louis tonight. Wily Peralta will start against Carlos Martinez.
Milwaukee has designated pitcher Tommy Milone for assignment. If he clears waivers, he’ll be assigned to Colorado Springs. Rob Scahill has been called up from the Sky Sox to fill the vacancy.

In the NHL playoffs last night…
– The Capitals edged the Penguins 3-2 in overtime. Pittsburgh leads that series 2-1.
Tonight…
– The Senators met the Rangers. Ottawa leads that set 2-0.
– The Blues take on the Predators. Nashville leads that series 2-1.
NBA
In the NBA playoffs yesterday…
– The Cavaliers defeated the Raptors 116-105. Cleveland leads that series 1-0.
– The Rockets ripped the Spurs 126-99. Houston leads that series 1-0.
Tonight…
– The Celtics face the Wizards. Boston leads that set 1-0.
– The Jazz face the Warriors in the opening game of that second-round series.
NFL
After selecting several running backs in the recent NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers have cut Christine Michael and Don Jackson.
MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team is headed to Las Vegas next season. The Huskies will join Northern Michigan, Arizona State and Boston College at the first Ice Vegas Invitational January 5th and 6th.
Finlandia
Finlandia University introduced some new women’s hockey players yesterday. They include Melody Anderson from Hancock, who competed in the Copper Country Junior Hockey Association this past season. Other recruits include Rebecca Lily from New Zealand; Hannah Tormanen from Delano, Minnesota; Taylor Witte from LeSueur, Minnesota; and goaltender Elisabeth Hill from Arlington, Texas.
