Airport expects quick return to normal

Houghton County Memorial Airport is now expecting a return to normal traffic as early as this summer. That represents a significantly rosier picture than even a couple months ago. Vaccinations have boosted traveler confidence and led to a surge in Spring Break bookings, the first sign that consumers are ready to fly the friendly skies. Manager Dennis Hext says the momentum continues to build.

Things are going to go back to normal by this summer. Airlines are scrambling right now to get pilots and get their planes out of mothballs and getting them going again, because demand is coming back stronger than they anticipated. When I say demand, I don’t just mean for the Spring Break bookings. They’re looking at bookings into June, July, and August.

By comparison, passenger traffic was down by approximately 50% last year compared to the year prior. That occurred even as the Western UP saw a swell of visitors. They ballooned local hotel rates to as much as $190 a night, but mostly arrived by vehicle.

Sawyer Airport in Marquette is adding two additional flights to daily operations in early May. The summer months tend to be the busiest time of the year.
