Ahmeek Ice Rink Receives $5,000 Grant from the CLK Youth Hockey Fund to Build the Boards

The Ahmeek Hockey Rink receives a 5,000 dollar grant to Build the Boards. The Keweenaw Community Foundation recently announced that the CLK Youth Hockey Fund has awarded a 5,000 dollar grant to the Build the Boards project in memory of Joel Tuoriniemi. Earlier in the year several community members concerned about the state of the rink’s old boards banded together to create a fundraising campaign. The goal of the project is to replace boards that were installed in 1992 and many repairs since. The outdoor rink’s most recent update came in 2019 with the installation of board sheeting that came from the Calumet Colosseum.

Rebuilding the boards will cost an estimated 100,000 dollars in total. So far the campaign has raised 67,000 dollars for the project. Volunteers working on the project hope to raise enough funds by the start of summer so installation can finish before the start of the next skating season. Named donors to the campaign will additionally be added to a plaque that will hang inside the Ahmeek Ice Rink facility. Learn more about the Ahmeek Ice Rink and the Build the Boards campaign here.
