Ahmeek Fire’s Assistant Chief Michael DeFina Awarded Firefighter of the Year Award

Ahmeek’s Fire 2nd Assistant Chief Michael DeFina has been awarded the Firefighter of the Year award from the American Legion Department of Michigan. DeFina received letters of recommendation supporting him as the firefighter of the year from Fire Chief Mike Maninga, Ahmeek Village President John Spagnotti, Legion Post 61 Commander David Crowley, and State Representative Greg Markkanen.

DeFina has become a very involved leader of the Ahmeek Village Fire Department over the years. In recent years DeFina has led the department’s effort on grant-writing. A skill he has developed to help Ahmeek make several necessary upgrades to its equipment. Such as when the Ahmeek Village Fire Department purchased a new fire engine that was funded in part with grants, fundraising efforts, and department funds. He has also set up the Ahmeek Village Fire Department to become more involved in community events such as joining the Keweenaw County Sheriff at Safety Day in the summer. Or continuing the department’s Christmas tradition and delivering gifts to kids in the village.
