With the snow now melting away and revealing road shoulders, Adopt-a-Highway crews will begin cleaning Michigan’s roads.
Due to rapid snowmelt and severe storms moving though the Great Lakes Region, highway ditches filled with water, covering the trash that needed to be removed.
The Adopt-a-Highway state program has been very popular among community groups and businesses wishing to show a little hometown pride.
“In the UP alone, we have about 500 groups involving roughly 4000 volunteers annually. It’s popular because it’s a way for groups like church groups, youth groups, [and] families to give back to their community and show their community pride by cleaning up areas by the roadside and nearby. And it gives those groups credit for the hard work they’re doing through signs that get sold on the segments of the roadway they adopt.” – Communications Representative for MDOT, Dan Weingarten.
For crews in need of an extension for their road clean-up slots, MDOT asks that the organizers contact the department directly.
MDOT tries to schedule Adopt-a-Highway cleanup windows the same time each year to easily coordinate MDOT crews retrieving the garbage bags.
If you our your organization are interested in the program, Weingarten suggests to check what sections of road have not yet been adopted on MDOT’s website.
