Achoo or the Flu? Free Aspiring Women Event Spreads Awareness About Influenza Season

LAURIUM, Mich. – The common cold and the flu can often look alike, so how can you tell the difference? Having a stuffy nose, sneezing and a sore throat are more indicative of a cold. Symptoms like fever, headache, body aches, weakness, fatigue, and extreme exhaustion are rarely signs of a cold but are common indicators of the flu.

Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital and Clinics invites all ladies to another FREE Aspiring Women event on Wednesday, Sept. 20, to learn why getting vaccinated can help cut down on missed work and school, doctor’s visits, hospitalizations, and even flu-related deaths.

Achoo or the Flu? takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Michigan Tech Memorial Union Ballroom in Houghton. You’ll hear from Aspirus health experts Shannon Handler, Family Nurse Practitioner; Jessica Bessner, Director of Pharmacy; and Jessica Herman, Registered Nurse and Infection Prevention Coordinator. Pre-registration is required for this free event. Call Jenn Jenich-Laplander at 906-337-6541 to reserve your spot.

Discussion topics include complications that result from the flu, like pneumonia, that can be very serious and even life-threatening. Though anyone can get the flu, more serious complications usually affect young children, pregnant women, people with certain chronic medical conditions, and anyone aged 65 and older.

Information on preventive measures you can take to stay happy and healthy during flu season will also be offered. Achoo or the Flu? is a positive starting point for discussing and creating a health and wellness plan with your physician.

“No one looks forward to flu season, though it tends to coincide with many fall and winter holidays,” said Aspiring Women Coordinator Jenn Jenich-Laplander. “This is a great event for you to find out the difference between a case of the sniffles or something more serious, and learn what you can do to keep yourself healthy.”

Ladies will enjoy:

  • Free immune system-boosting appetizers
  • Opportunity to ask questions (including anonymous questions)
  • Complimentary drink token
  • Aspiring Women gift
  • Raffles
  • Flu shots (Call for details)

Aspiring Women is designed to inspire health and wellness through educational and entertaining events for women.
