A Michigan Technological University alumnus was recently cast in an Indigenous language dubbed version of Star Wars: A New Hope

A Michigan Technological University alumni takes on a role in a dubbed version of Star Wars A New Hope. Kalvin Hartwig, a 2010 graduate of Michigan Technological University, has dedicated his career to spreading awareness of indigenous languages. Recently he brought his skills to an Ojibwe dubbed version of Star Wars A New Hope, that began streaming on Disney + just before the start of Native American Heritage Month. While at Michigan Tech, Hartwig studied social sciences, humanities, and German.

He voices the Red Leader, originally played by Gordon Henley. He says he’s proud to have been a part of an inspiring team of people making history, sharing the Anishinaabe language and culture through a classic film of resistance. Recording for the Ojibwe production of Star Wars occurred over 10 days in Manitoba. The dubbed version of A New Hope is the first Hollywood or Disney film dubbed in the Ojibwe language.
