A Dozen Scholarships Awarded to 16 Local Students

The Keweenaw Community Foundation awarded scholarships to local students.

They awarded a total of 12 scholarships to 16 students between middle school and college.

KCF would like to thank the sponsors for making the scholarships possible, and for all the students who applied this year to make it their most popular application period to date.

A from the Keweenaw Community Foundation press release: 

  • The Bernard F. Gaffney Scholarship Fund recipient is Quinn Fontaine. The Bernard F. Gaffney Scholarship Fund (established in 2000) honors the memory of Mr. Gaffney and his decades-long career as principal of Houghton High School (1937-1961) and the Superintendent of Houghton-Portage Township Schools (1961-1966). 
  • The Faith Lutheran Church Scholarship recipient is Hunter Moyle. The Faith Lutheran Church in Calumet awards scholarships based on academic performance, demonstrated leadership potential, financial need, and involvement in the community. 
  • The Richard and Clara Fedewa Scholarship recipient is Stella Wickstrom. The Richard and Clara Fedewa Scholarship is available to female members of the St. Ignatius Catholic parish and is awarded based on academic achievement, need, and parish/community involvement.
  • The Houghton Rotary Scholarship recipients are Gabrielle Bishop, Thomas Knewtson, and Jake Zadorecky. The Houghton Rotary Scholarship is awarded to Houghton High School graduates who possess the aptitude, motivation and resolve to successfully pursue higher education, whether at a university or trade school.
  • The Stuart Family Scholarship recipient is Kathryn Fay. The Stuart Family Scholarship is awarded to outstanding graduates of Houghton-Portage High School who have distinguished themselves both academically and outside the classroom.
  • The Gary Heikenen Memorial Scholarship recipient is Stephanie Kezele. The Gary Heikenen Memorial Scholarship is awarded to Keweenaw County residents who are dedicated to pursuing higher education. 
  • The Heikenen Nursing Scholarship recipient is Sarah Berryman. The Heikenen Nursing Scholarship is awarded to local RNs to complete additional training opportunities outside of the Upper Peninsula.
  • The Ronald and Lou Ellyn Helman Scholarship recipients are Sharon Colbert and Luc Destrampe. The Ronald and Lou Ellyn Helman Scholarship is awarded for attending trade or vocational programs, such as construction, welding, secretarial, electrical, nursing aid, automotive services, etc.
  • The Alec Fisher Scholarship Fund recipient is Carter Zawacki. This fund was established in 2019 to honor the memory of Alec Fisher and is open to Michigan Technological University students at the Junior level or above with majors in Environmental Engineering or Management Information Systems.
  • The Sean M. Williams Memorial Scholarship recipient is Taylor Drift. The Sean M. Williams Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a Keweenaw Bay Indian Community member or descendent attending Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College in the fields of Liberal Studies or Anishinaabe Studies.
  • The Jack Eberhard Memorial Scholarship recipient is Ryan Schmierer. The Jack Eberhard Memorial Scholarship is awarded to high school golfers who demonstrate their academic success, golf performance, and good sportsmanship. 
  • The Anthony and Patricia Stark Scholarship, created to help younger students pursue their love of music, has been awarded to two elementary and middle school students to help fund their music lessons.
