911 Advisory Committee Request Equipment Purchases for Police Cruisers, and the Jeffers SRO Officer

Other actions by the county commission included approving an MPSC Co-Location License Agreement and resolution with the state for sharing the Centennial 911 location for equipment. The agreement and resolution documents the agreement between the county and state.

“ We went back and forth a couple of times about some language. And I had it taken out and they were fine with it.    One of them said to the effect that we would be charged a monthly fee. So I had that taken out because, throughout this whole process, we were guaranteed that this wasn’t going to cost any money to our county. That was the only thing that I wanted to be taken out of the agreement.” John Giachino, Under-sheriff, Houghton County Sheriff’s Office

The state Public Service Commission Co-Location agreement and the resolution were accepted by the commission.

A second item for the commission dealing with the 911 Advisory Committee included several equipment purchases. The county will purchase a portable radio for the new school resource office in Jeffers High School. The county has been contracted with the Adams Township school district for SRO services for a part-time position. The next included 70 Dual-band pagers and Fire department batteries to replace old equipment. A final item included a service cost for installing the Premiere One computer system in county sheriff cruisers. Houghton and Keweenaw County are the last two in the state using an older system that was used statewide.

“We want to have an agreement with REMC to help us onboard all of the cars in Houghton County. That would include the sheriff and all police cars. And that cost is a one-time fee of 12,188 dollars. And then we are recommending an 8,000 dollar annual cost to help with data and connectivity issues in Houghton County in all of the cars.” John Giachino, Under-sheriff, Houghton County Sheriff’s Office

The total cost for the 911 committee’s equipment purchase request adds up to 87,300 dollars. The REMC1 annual cost for data and connection services will cost Houghton County about 8,000 dollars. The equipment purchase was accepted as a packaged item.

Additionally, Commission Chairman Tom Tikkanen and Commissioner Glenn Anderson was absent from the meeting.
