High School
Weather and poor field conditions again wiped out yesterday’s high school baseball and softball schedule.
Dryden Nelson and Marybeth Halonen have been honored as Calumet High School’s outstanding athletes for the class of 2022.
Nelson receives the George Gipp All-American Award. He earned 10 varsity letters in football, basketball, track and baseball, along with numerous post-season honors.
Marybeth Halonen receives the Holly Jean McCullah Outstanding Female Athlete Award. She earned eight varsity letters in basketball, volleyball and softball, and also earned numerous post-season honors.

Kyra Sipe of L’Anse and Nikolas Thomas of Dollar Bay-Tamarack City have been named this year’s Copper Mountain Conference Most Valuable Track and Field Performers.
Other local athletes honored on the girls side include Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Emily Jokela as top sprinter, Ontonagon’s Kiirsa Kolpak as top hurdler, and Dollar Bay’s Nora Keranen as top jumper. Ontonagon was named Team of the Year.
Other local athletes honored on the boys side include Reece LaBine of Ontonagon as top sprinter, Ewen-Trout Creek’s Jonah Nordine as top distance runner, Dollar Bay’s A.J. Datto as top hurdler, Nathan Hochstein from L’Anse as top jumper, and Eli Ostermayer from L’Anse as top thrower. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City was named Team of the Year.

NHL conference semifinals continued last evening…
• In the Eastern Conference, the Hurricanes edged the Rangers 3-1. Carolina leads that series 3-2.
• In the Western Conference, the Oilers advanced with a 5-4 overtime victory over the Flames. Edmonton wins that series 4-1.
Tonight…
• In the Western Conference, the Blues host the Avalanche. Colorado leads that series 3-2.
NBA
In the NBA Western Conference finals last night, the Warriors advanced with a 120-110 victory over the Mavericks. Golden State wins that series 4-1.
In the Eastern Conference finals this evening, the Heat visit the Celtics. Boston leads that series 3-1.
MLB
Miguel Cabrera singled home Jonathan Schoop in the bottom of the ninth, as the Detroit Tigers shaded the Cleveland Guardians 4-3 last night. Tarik Skubal gave up three runs over seven effective innings. Gregory Soto earned the win in relief.
The Tigers host the Guardians again tonight. Alex Faedo will pitch against Shane Bieber. Coverage will begin at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
Starting pitcher Matt Manning won’t be back with the Tigers anytime soon. Manning had been rehabbing from shoulder inflammation, but has now been diagnosed with biceps tendinitis. He’s been shut down indefinitely.
The Milwaukee Brewers did their scoring early, then held on to edge the Saint Louis Cardinals 4-3 last evening. Luis Urías homered for the Crew. Eric Lauer gave up two runs over five innings, and got the win.
The Brewers continue that series in Saint Louis tonight. Brandon Woodruff will start against Dakota Hudson.
Josh Hader is back with the Brewers after a few days off because of a family medical situation. Reliever Miguel Sánchez has been sent back to Nashville.
