Calumet, MTU Hockey Teams Advance – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

The Calumet High School hockey team advanced to the state semifinals with a 5-1 victory over Alpena Saturday. The Copper Kings led 1-0 after the first period, then put the contest away with three second-period tallies. Calumet will face Midland Dow Friday at 1:30 in the semifinals at Plymouth. The Chargers defeated East Grand Rapids 3-1 in their quarterfinal game Saturday. Warren de la Salle will face Orchard Lake Saint Mary’s in the other Division Three semifinal.

Marquette is also headed to Plymouth, after defeating Traverse City Central 7-1 in their Division Two quarterfinal game Saturday. The Redmen will face Hartland Thursday at 5:00 in their semifinal match. Bloomfield Hills Bother Rice and Trenton will meet in the other Division Two semifinal.

In Division One, Midland and Detroit Catholic Central will play in one semifinal, and Grandville will face Brighton in the other.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team advanced to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament semifinals with a 3-2 double overtime victory over Ferris State University Saturday. Parker Saretsky’s goal deep into the second extra period was the game-winner. Tech had built a 2-0 lead on goals by Logan Pietila and Jake Crespi. The Bulldogs scored twice in the third period to force extra time. Blake Pietila made 32 saves.

Northern Michigan University lost 3-2 to Lake Superior State. That best-of-three set is tied at a win per team, and will be decided tonight at Sault Ste. Marie.

In other CCHA quarterfinal games, Minnesota State moved into the semifinals with an 8-2 win over St. Thomas 3-2. Bemidji State defeated Bowling Green 4-2 – that series is tied, and will be decided today.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams lost in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament Saturday…
• At Allendale, the women fell to top-seeded Grand Valley 71-57. Ellie Mackay led the Huskies with 20 points. Tech ends its season with a record of 18-11.
• At the SDC, the men lost 78-71 to Northern Michigan University. Owen White scored 30 points, and Trent Bell added 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. With a record of 21-7, the Huskies will find out tonight if they have earned an at-large berth in the NCAA playoffs.

Northern will face GLIAC eighth-seeded Davenport in the men’s championship game this afternoon at 2:30 at the SDC. After stunning top-seed Ferris State in the quarterfinals, the Panthers dispatched Saginaw Valley State 98-80 Saturday. Grand Valley will take on Ferris State in the women’s title game.

College Softball

The Finlandia softball team concluded its Florida schedule with a 5-2 loss to Bridgewater State, and an 8-0 loss to Mitchell College Saturday.

College Baseball

The Finlandia baseball team ended its Florida trip with a doubleheader split against Gordon College Saturday. The Lions won the first game 13-9, then dropped the nightcap 9-6.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers edged the Fond du Lac Bears 7-6 Saturday.

Brent Loukus had four goals and two assists, as the Calumet Wolverines defeated the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 10-3.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost 6-2 to the Florida Panthers Saturday. Robby Fabbri and Tyler Bertuzzi scored for Detroit. Thomas Greiss gave up five goals before he was replaced by Alex Nedelkjovic midway through the contest.

The Wings host the Arizona Coyotes Tuesday. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the Atlanta Hawks tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

CopperDog 150

Defending champion J.R. Anderson extended his lead in the CopperDog 150 with an excellent run in stage two Saturday. Anderson started the day with a 43-second lead over Ryan Anderson. Heading into today’s final stage, his advantage is now more than 13 minutes. Joanna Oberg turned in the second-best run yesterday, and moved up to third place overall. Local musher Sarah Tarlton logged the third-best finish in stage two, and moved up to sixth place overall. Local musher Tom Bauer began and ended day two in eighth place.

Both the CopperDog 150 and the two-stage CopperDog 80 will conclude today with runs from Copper Harbor to Eagle Harbor. This morning’s restart will begin at 8:30. Bucky Tippett holds a nearly two-minute lead over Lynne Witte in the 80.

Ben Thompson won his third-straight CopperDog 25 Saturday, edging Geri Minard by 11 seconds on a course slowed by freezing rain. Anna Anderson finished third, nearly six minutes off the pace. Among local mushers, Susan Serafini placed 10th, Becky Bean 13th, Alyssa Saarland from the Mushing Club at Michigan Tech 15th, and Kelly Jo Engle 16th.
