Road construction projects firm up in L’Anse

Some badly-needed street repairs in L’Anse are getting closer. Last night, the village council awarded contracts for repaving L’Anse Avenue and Baraga Avenue. The two projects will cost $510,000. Nearly half will be covered by a state grant. Greg Kingstrom from Upper Peninsula Engineers and Architects laid out the timetable.

Both contracts have to be completed by the first week of August. With the typical load restrictions and spring weather, I don’t imagine either one of them will start any earlier than the middle of June. So, there’s going to be about a two-month window where the work will get done.

Business owner Monique Cadeau shared a concern about downtown parking. Limited curbside spaces are available on Main Street north of Broad Street, and some are being filled by employees of downtown businesses.

If someone is working next door to me and they go to work at 7:30 and they leave work at 5:30, then they’re utilizing that parking spot all day long. That should be kept available for all of us businesses.

Village manager Robert LaFave said that off-street parking is available next to the Village Hall, which should be used by downtown workers. The council will consider options to keep the curbside spaces available for customers.
