High School
In high school baseball Saturday…
– Calumet took two games from L’Anse. The Kings put up 11 runs and Russ Bjorn threw a complete game for the 11-8 victory in the opening contest. Colin Loukus went two-for-three at the plate, while Russ Bjorn, Wyatt Loukus, Rory Anderson, Brandon Antilla and Jack Sturos all contributed hits. In the second game, Robert Hill allowed just two hits in a 14-1, mercy-rule shortened affair. Rory Anderson, Russ Bjorn and Jack Sturos all tripled, and Brent Loukus went three-for-three at the plate to lead the Kings on offense.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers belted three consecutive home runs in the first inning, and cruised to a 9-3 victory over the Texas Rangers Saturday. Alex Avila, Miguel Cabrera and J.D. Martinez staked Justin Verlander to a quick 3-0 lead. Nicholas Castellanos added a three-run shot in the third. Justin Verlander gave up three runs on four hits over seven innings to earn the win.
The Tigers host the Rangers again this evening. Matthew Boyd will start against Yu Darvish. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:40 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Detroit second baseman Ian Kinsler left Saturday’s game after the fourth inning because of tightness in his left hamstring. The injury is not believed to be serious.
The Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs were rained out Saturday. No makeup date has been announced.
The Brewers conclude that series in Chicago this afternoon. Chase Anderson will pitch against Jake Arrieta.
After waiting a decade to make his major league debut, Paulo Espino is headed back to the minors. Junior Guerra is scheduled to return from the disabled list, and will take over that rotation spot. Tyler Cravy has been called up to provide help in the bullpen.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs Saturday, the Predators defeated the Ducks 3-1. Nashville leads the Western Conference final 3-2. That series continues Monday at Nashville.
Today, the Penguins host the Senators. The Eastern Conference final is tied 2-2.
NBA
In the NBA playoffs, the Warriors outscored the Spurs 120-108. Golden State leads the Western Conference final 3-0. That series continues Monday at San Antonio.
The Eastern Conference final continues tonight, as the Cavaliers host the Celtics. Cleveland leads that series 2-0.
