The Summit Lake Fire remains within its existing footprint and has become 42 percent contained. On Thursday the U.S. National Forest Service announced fire fighting crews have contained 42 percent of the wildfire that started October 18th.
The blaze has consumed 328 acres of forest, primarily hardwood and conifers. Crews effectively secured the west and southwestern flanks of the fire. Firefighter efforts combined with additional rain and moisture in the area greatly reduced smoke visibility and heat on the ground. Crews will continue to reinforce firelines and construct fuel breaks with natural barriers to further contain the fire.
The summit of Lake Fife was discovered approximately 12 miles north of Lake Michigan in late October. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Yellow Dog Trailhead remains closed at this time.
