In high school volleyball last night…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell claimed the Torch Lake Trophy with a 3-1 (25-6, 21-25, 25-13, 25-18) victory over Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. Cleo Milkey had 10 kills and 5 aces for the Lakes, Emily Burnham had 7 kills and 6 blocks, and Payton Goldsworthy had 25 assists. For the Blue Bolts, Kiera Isaacson had 2 aces, 9 services points, 12 kills and 16 digs; Kaylynn Smith 16 digs; Evelyn Moilanen 4 kills and 9 digs; Kelsey Jaehnig 5 kills; and Macy Jurgensen 24 assists.
- Chassell blanked Watersmeet 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-18). For Chassell, Elli Kuntze had 2 kills, 10 digs, and 5 aces; Sylvia Aho 13 assists and 4 aces; Dusty Lippold 10 kills, 5 digs and 1 ace; and Oriana Olson had 8 kills and 2 aces.
- Baraga fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 3-1.
Calumet opens play in the state high school football tournament at Kingsley tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 12:40 in advance of a 1:00 kickoff on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. The Stags are the defending Division Six state champions.

College Basketball
Michigan Tech guard Marcus Tomashek has been projected as Player of the Year in the GLIAC Men’s Basketball Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Tomashek finished sixth in the nation in scoring last season. Northern Michigan forward Dylan Kuehl was placed on the preseason All-Conference First Team..
The coaches picked Michigan Tech to finish sixth in the league this season. Lake Superior State was voted the favorite to win the title, followed by Ferris State and Northern Michigan.
