Tech Football Wins 14th-Straight Miner’s Cup – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football Saturday…

  • Lake Linden-Hubbell closed its season by outscoring Ontonagon 44-36. Nate St. Onge ran for 178 yards on 26 attempts, and scored three touchdowns and three two-point conversions. Josh Daavettila added 48 yards on 12 attempts, and one two-point conversion. Brady Axford completed six of ten passes for 123 yards and one touchdown.

Pairings for the upcoming high school football and volleyball tournaments will be released late today.

College Hockey

The MTU hockey team fell 2-1 in overtime to Clarkson Saturday night. Chase Pietila scored the Huskies’ lone goal. Derek Mullahy stopped 31 shots in his first start in goal for Tech.

The NMU hockey squad dropped a 2-0 decision to Arizona State Saturday evening. The game was scoreless until the Sun Devils found the net with four minutes remaining. They added a late empty-netter to seal the win. 

College Volleyball

The Tech volleyball team lost 3-1 at 13th-ranked Grand Valley State Saturday. Meg Raabe had 14 kills.

The Northern volleyball team was shut out 3-0 at Wayne State Saturday.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team will host Roosevelt University today at noon.

The Northern women’s team will welcome Purdue Northwest today.

The Northern men’s team will play at Roosevelt in Chicago today.

College Football

The MTU football team retained the Miner’s Cup with a resounding 39-9 victory over Northern Michigan Saturday. Alex Fries threw two touchdown passes. Red-shirt freshman quarterback Alex Bueno passed for one TD, and ran for another. Jaxon Lippert returned a punt 78 yards for a score, and Avery Kucharski kicked two field goals. It’s the 14th straight year that Tech has won the rivalry match.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers opened their season with an 8-4 victory over the M and M Shamrocks Saturday.

NHL

The Red Wings’ three-game win streak ended with a 5-3 loss to the Sabers Saturday afternoon. Alex DeBrincat, Michael Rasmussen and Lucas Raymond scored. Alex Lyon made 34 saves, as the Detroit was outshot 39-25.

The Wings will host the Oilers tonight. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, Wings coverage will start at 5:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons fell to 0-3 on the season, after a 124-118 defeat in Boston Saturday evening. Jaden Ivey scored 26 points, and Cade Cunningham added 22 points and 11 assists. Tobias Harris grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Pistons visit the Heat tomorrow evening.

MLB

The Dodgers grabbed an early lead, and held off the Yankees 4-2 to take a 2-0 lead in the World Series Saturday. The victory was dimmed when L-A star whether Shohei Ohtani left the game after a slide into second base. He’s been diagnosed with a partially separated left shoulder. can play after their biggest star partially dislocated his left shoulder on a slide at second base. His status for game three of the series tomorrow night in New York is uncertain.

NFL

The Lions host the Titans in a 1:00 game today on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Packers visit the Jaguars for a 1:00 contest.

In the Sunday night contest, the Cowboys visit the 49ers on 99.3 The Lift.
