Firefighters have been able to slow the advance of the Summit Lake Fire in eastern L’Anse Township, but the blaze continues.
Forest Service officials report the fire covers around 112 acres of mixed hardwood and conifer forest. Light rain that fell Saturday was quickly dried by warm winds yesterday.
The most active part of the fire is now reported to be near Evergreen Lake where it is backing and burning in woody debris. The rest of the perimeter is creeping and smoldering with interior pockets of heavy ground fuels being consumed.
Smoke is visible in the area near the fire, and has been drifting toward the northeast.
The fire is located in a remote section of the McCormick Wilderness, about 12 miles due north of Michigamme. It is not accessible by vehicle. Because of that, there are no road closures or threatened structures.
Yesterday, firefighters began developing a plan to contain the blaze. Monitoring from the ground and by aircraft continues. Officials urged the public not to fly drones in the area, because they could put aerial resources at risk.
Investigators are still trying to determine how the fire started.
