Wildfire Burning in Eastern Baraga County

National Forest Service officials are monitoring a wildfire in a remote section of the McCormick Wilderness.

Dubbed the “Summit Lake Fire,” the blaze was discovered by aircraft Friday evening, and was estimated to cover five acres. Fire crews hiked to the area Saturday, and placed the size at roughly 100 acres. The area is not accessible to vehicles.

The fire is described as “creeping and smoldering.” Officials say the area is forested, with a mix of hardwoods and conifers.

Firefighters are developing a plan to deal with it, and will monitor it with help from aircraft.

No structures are threatened, and no road or trail closures are in effect.

Summit Lake is located near the eastern edge of Baraga County, in L’Anse Township, approximately 12 miles due north of Lake Michigamme.
