U.P. XC Crowns for Jeffers Boys, Hancock and E-TC Girls – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

The Jeffers boys, and Hancock and Ewen-Trout Creek girls, won titles at the U.P. Cross Country finals staged Saturday at the Pictured Rocks Golf Course in Munising.

Both Division One crowns went to Marquette. The Sentinels boys took five of the top six spots. Houghton placed third, behind Sault Ste. Marie. Birk Seagren finished 10th individually for the Gremlins. Calumet came in seventh out of the 10 competing teams, with a 16th-place individual finish for Andrew Junttila. The Houghton girls finished second, just two standings points behind the Sentinels. Tessa Rautiola of the Gremlins medaled. Sela Niska placed third, and Roman Trevino Peterson fourth. Calumet took fifth place among the nine competing teams.

The Jets easily outpaced Rudyard to take the Division Two boys title. All five Jeffers runners placed in the top 11, with Cameron Anderson second, Landon Larson fifth, and Branson Anderson sixth. Hancock finished eighth out of the eight teams in the division. The Bulldog girls landed four runners in the top 10, and easily outdistanced runner-up Baraga. Ella Keranen placed second individually, with Alena Pietila fourth.

Engadine got past Stephenson to claim the Division Three boys crown. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City finished third, and Chassell ninth out of 10 competing teams. Joshua Gaunt of the Blue Bolts placed sixth overall. Kalvin Kytta of the Panthers was the individual medalist. Ewen-Trout Creek placed four runners in the top 10, and finished comfortably ahead of runner-up Engadine. Bree Besonen paced the Panthers with a sixth-place finish. Chassell finished third, with a fifth-place showing for Sylvia Aho.

The Calumet volleyball team finished 2-1 at the Division 1-2-3-4 quadrangular they hosted Saturday. The Copper Kings fell to Kingsford 2-1 (20-25, 21-25, 18-25), defeated Forest Park 2-1 (25-20, 25-20, 25-21) and defeated Marquette 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-13). For the day, Allie Bjorn had 37 kills, 4 aces, 20 digs and 2 blocks; Jackie Kiilunen 34 kills and 43 digs; Sienna Anderson 8 kills, 7 aces and 13 digs; Jess Anderson 43 digs; and Bella Coppo 84 assists.

College Football

The MTU football team fell 51-13 at fourth-ranked Ferris State Saturday. The Bulldogs led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter, and piled up 577 yards of total offense. FSU quarterback Trinidad Chambliss tossed six touchdown passes. The Huskies scored all of their points in the second quarter, on a five-yard Alex Fries touchdown pass, and two Avery Kucharski field goals.

Northern football fell to GLIAC newcomer Roosevelt University 16-10 in overtime. The Wildcats remain winless this season.

College Hockey

The Northern hockey team fell to Alaska-Anchorage 5-3 Saturday, and settled for a split in their two-game weekend series. The Seawolves outshot the Wildcats 49-25. 

Tech hockey had the weekend off.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team will play at Ferris State this afternoon.

The Northern women’s team will play at Davenport today.

The Northern men’s squad will entertain Davenport today.

College Volleyball

At the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Saturday….

  • Michigan Tech wrapped up play with a 3-1 ( 25-20, 20-25, 25-21, 25-21) victory over Findlay.
  • Northern Michigan’s six-match winning streak ended with a 3-1 (25-19, 16-25, 11-25, 26-28) loss to Rockhurst.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers netted the final four goals of the game, and outscored the Calumet Wolverines 6-2 in an early-season exhibition Saturday night at the Colosseum.

NHL

The Red Wings scored three goals in the third period, and dispatched the winless Predators 5-2 Saturday. Andrew Copp scored twice, and Vladimir Tarasenko, Dylan Larkin and Simon Edvinsson each found the net once. Alex Lyon made 37 saves.

The Wings visit the Islanders Tuesday. Coverage will begin at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons open the regular season Wednesday at home against the Pacers. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Yankees are headed to the World Series. Juan Soto’s three-run homer in the 10th inning gave the Bronx Bombers a 5-2 victory over the Guardians Saturday. New York takes the American League Championship Series 4-1. 

The Dodgers lead the Mets 3-2 in the National League Championship Series, and could advance to the World Series with a win in Los Angeles tonight.

NFL

The Lions visit the unbeaten Vikings in a 1:00 game today on 99.3 The Lift. The Vikings are hopeful that running back Aaron Jones will play – he’s recovering from a hamstring injury. Tight end T.J. Hockenson will not play, despite hopes that he could return from the knee injury he suffered against Detroit late last season.

The Packers host the Texans in a 1:00 contest.
