Sweeps Rule in Thursday’s HS Volleyball – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…

  • Calumet wiped out Westwood 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-10). Allie Bjorn had six kills and six aces; Maddie Torola 13 kills and three aces; Millie Loukus and Bella Coppo each had 11 assists; and Sienna Anderson three aces.
  • Hancock stopped Ishpeming 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-22) on Senior Night.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Baraga 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 27-25). For the Lakes, Cleo Milkey had 14 kills, three aces and seven digs; Emily Burnham five kills and three blocks; and Ashlyn Steves 12 digs.
  • Dollar Bay-Tamarack City celebrated Parents Night with their sixth straight win, 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-20) over L’Anse. For the Blue Bolts, Sophie Berryman had seven service points, two kills, and two digs; Kiera Isaacson four aces, 12 kills, and 13 digs; Laila Bell nine service points and five digs; Evelyn Moilanen four aces, 10 service points, three kills, and eight digs; Kelsey Jaehnig four kills; and Macy Jurgensen six aces, 15 service points, 20 assists, and 10 digs. 
  • Jeffers swept Bessemer 3-0 (25-7, 25-20, 25-9). Kloe Verran had four aces; Taylor Heinonen five aces, seven digs, two kills and 10 assists; Liz Halonen 11 assists; and Mia Nordstrom eight kills.
  • Chassell lost to Ironwood 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-11). For the Panthers, Elli Kuntze had eight assists; Oriana Olson six kills; and Paige Danison four kills, two aces and one block.
  • Ewen-Trout Creek dispatched Watersmeet 3-0.

On the volleyball schedule tomorrow, Calumet hosts a Division 1-2-3-4 quadrangular. Marquette will represent Division One; Kingsford Division Two; the Copper Kings Division Three; and Forest Park Division Four. Contests begin at 10:00 tomorrow morning, with two gyms in use. The public is welcome.

In high school football tonight…

  • Houghton travels to Negaunee. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
  • Calumet journeys to Gladstone. Coverage will start at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
  • Hancock plays at Westwood.
  • L’Anse entertains Gwinn.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell visits Ironwood.

The U.P. Cross Country finals will be run tomorrow at the Pictured Rocks Golf Course in Munising.

College Football

The MTU football team plays at Ferris State tomorrow afternoon.

Northern football hosts Roosevelt University tomorrow.

College Hockey

The Northern hockey team entertains Alaska tonight and tomorrow.

Tech hockey has the weekend off.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team plays at Davenport University this afternoon at 2:00.

The Northern women’s team plays at Ferris State this afternoon.

The Northern men’s team hosts Saginaw Valley State today.

College Volleyball

The MTU and NMU volleyball teams play at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover event this weekend….

  • The Huskies will open against Quincy this afternoon, and Tiffin this evening.
  • The Wildcats will face Findlay this afternoon, and Indianapolis tonight.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers and Calumet Wolverines open their season with an early match against each other tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 6:00 at the Colosseum.

NHL

The Red Wings’ slow season start continued with a 5-2 loss to the Rangers last night. Moritz Seider and J.T. Compher scored for Detroit. Cam Talbot gave up five goals on 19 shots, and was replaced by Alex Lyon midway through the game.

The Wings visit the Predators tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons open the regular season Wednesday at home against the Pacers. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Guardians shaded the Yankees 7-5 in 10 innings. Jhonkensy Noel’s two-out homer in the bottom of the ninth tied the game, and David Fry’s two-run shot in the bottom of the 10th was the game-winner. New York leads the American League Championship Series 2-1, with game four in Cleveland tonight.

In the National League Championship Series, the Dodgers clubbed the Mets 10-2. L.A. leads that series 3-1, and could advance to the World Series with a win in New York tonight.

NFL

In last night’s NFL contest, the Broncos buried the Saints 33-13. Javonte Williams ran for two touchdowns.

The Lions visit the unbeaten Vikings in a 1:00 game Sunday on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers host the Texans in a 1:00 contest.
