The Houghton boys soccer team travels to Grayling for a district tournament semifinal contest against the Vikings this afternoon at 5:00.

Menominee continues to hold the top spot in this week’s U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters eleven-player football rankings. The unbeaten Maroons were a unanimous pick, as was undefeated Kingsford for second place. Those teams meet Friday night at Menominee. Marquette placed third, followed by Iron Mountain and Negaunee. Calumet earned an honorable mention vote.

Forest Park edged out Pickford for the top spot in the eight-player poll. Both teams are unbeaten. North Central took third, followed by Norway and Ishpeming.

College Hockey

Two Michigan Tech hockey players have been honored by the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Max Vayrynen earned Goalie of the Week honors. He stopped 44 shots in the Huskies’ two opening-weekend wins over Alaska. Forward Elias Jansson was named Rookie of the Week. He scored the winning goal in the Huskies’ 2-1 overtime victory Friday.

NHL

The Red Wings fell 4-1 to the Rangers last night. Dylan Larkin scored Detroit’s lone goal with two seconds remaining in the first period. Alex Lyon stopped 24 shots, and took the loss in net.

The Wings will host the Rangers Thursday. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 7:15 on KBear 102.3.

Goaltender Ville Husso will remain with the Detroit organization, after no team claimed him off waivers. Husso will try to regain his mojo in Grand Rapids. Dropping Husso from the roster gave the Wings space to call forward Austin Watson up from the Griffins.

NBA

The Pistons conclude their brief pre-season campaign tomorrow at home against the Cavaliers. Listen for selected Pistons broadcasts again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Yankees took the opening game of the American League Championship Series last night, outscoring the Guardians 5-2. Game two will be played in New York tonight.

The Mets evened the National League Championship Series at a win per team with a 7-3 victory over the Dodgers last night. The series moves to New York for game three tomorrow.

Tigers shortstop Javier Báez should be sufficiently recovered from his late-summer hip surgery to join the team for spring training. Báez has struggled with Detroit, but still has three years and $73 million remaining on his contract. He was hampered by the hip injury this past season.

For the second year in a row, catcher William Contreras has been named the Brewers’ Most Valuable Player. The Milwaukee chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America named Tobias Myers Pitcher of the Year, and Jackson Chourio Top Newcomer.

NFL

In last night’s NFL game, the Bills shaded the Jets 23-20. Tyler Bass’ late field goal provided the margin, and Taron Johnson’s tumbling interception of a long Aaron Rodgers pass sealed the win.

If you played The Wolf Pro Football Challenge, you must have selected all 12 games correctly to be eligible to become our weekly winner.

Lions pass rusher Aiden Hutchinson underwent successful surgery to repair the broken leg he suffered in Sunday’s game. There’s some hope he could return in time for the Super Bowl, should Detroit make it that far.
