High School

In high school football last night…

  • Calumet blanked Houghton 29-0. The Copper Kings opened the game with a 17-play drive that took more than 11 minutes off the clock, but was stopped at the one-yard line by the Houghton defense. The Kings then scored on their next four possessions, including touchdown runs of 22 and 71 yards from Ben Anderson.
  • Hancock fell to Kingsford 50-8.
  • L’Anse lost at Bark River-Harris 54-0.
  • Ontonagon outscored Ironwood 32-20.

Today, Lake Linden-Hubbell welcomes North Central. Kickoff is at 1:30 at Warner Field.

The McAfee Field painting project will continue today, as volunteers work to change the color scheme from Finlandia University blue and white to Hancock crimson and gold. Athletic director Ryan Towles tells us workers can begin arriving at 10:00. No advance sign-up is necessary. Towles thanked McGann Building Supply for providing much of the paint and other supplies needed for the project.

In high school volleyball last night…

  • Dollar Bay defeated Chassell 3-1 (25-23, 25-11, 23-25, 25-15) in their Pink Out game. Macy Jurgensen led the Blue Bolts with 19 service points, 13 assists and 12 digs. Kaylynn Smith had eight service points and 19 digs. Evelyn Moilanen had seven service points and seven kills. Kiera Isaacson had 12 service points, seven kills, five assists, and eight digs. For the Panthers, Paige Danison had five kills, four aces, and three digs; Elli Kuntze had four kills and nine digs; Sylvia Aho had two kills, six assists, two blocks and five digs; and Oriana Olson had four kills, four digs and one ace.

In volleyball today…

  • Houghton travels to the Wrightstown Invitational.
  • Jeffers competes at the Escanaba Invitational.

The Houghton boys soccer team will play at the U.P. Invitational at Marquette today.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team dropped a 1-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-20) contest to Saginaw Valley State yesterday. The Huskies will host Ferris State tomorrow at noon.

Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team blanked Ferris State 3-0. Brooke Pietila became the Wildcats’ all-time leading scorer. Northern entertains Saginaw Valley State tomorrow.

College Volleyball

The Tech volleyball team swept Lake Superior State 3-0 yesterday. Rachel Zurek led the Huskies with 14 kills. Tess Hayes had 43 assists. The Huskies will entertain Saginaw Valley State today at 2:00.

The NMU volleyball squad downed Saginaw Valley State 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-21, 25-14). The Wildcats will host Lake Superior State today at 4:00.

College Football

The MTU football team hosts Wayne State in the annual homecoming game today at noon.

The NMU football squad entertains Saginaw Valley State today at 1:00.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team will host Northern Michigan for an exhibition contest tonight. Faceoff is at 6:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

NMU

The NMU basketball program will retire Tom Izzo’s #10 jersey number. The Iron Mountain native has been one of the country’s most successful college basketball coaches for the past 30 seasons at Michigan State. He was an All-American guard as a student-athlete at Northern in the mid-70s. His jersey will be raised in Vandament Arena, joining Ted Rose and Gene Summers. Izzo was inducted into the NMU Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.

MLB

The Tigers will open their American League Divisional Series today at Cleveland. Tyler Holton will open for Detroit. Tanner Bibee will pitch for the Guardians. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL

The Red Wings dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Senators in a preseason contest last night. Marco Kasper scored twice for Detroit. Alex Lyon took the loss in net.

The Wings wrap up their preseason schedule at Toronto tonight. Listen for regular-season Wings games on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit goalie Jack Campbell has entered the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program. The 32-year-old veteran was signed to provide depth at Grand Rapids this season, but will be away until he’s cleared to return by program administrators.

NFL

The Packers visit the Rams for a 4:25 game tomorrow.

The Lions have this weekend off.

Former Detroit quarterback Greg Landry has died. Landry played 11 of his 15 pro seasons in Detroit, and made the Pro Bowl in 1971. He was 77.
