2023 HOPE Survey shows a need and desire to address mental health and substance abuse in the Copper Country

The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department’s 2023 HOPE survey clarifies the need for mental health and substance abuse resources in the Copper Country. Last year the health department collected responses from close to 900 residents in Baraga Houghton Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties.

The survey showed that 66 percent of respondents have mental health conditions, and 46 percent responded to seriously considering suicide.

Though survey data clearly shows, says WUPHD Health Officer Kate Beer, the Copper Country desires to address mental health and substance abuse challenges. Copper Country Mental Health Institute Director Taryn Mason adds the survey builds a base for building stronger and healthier communities. Local mental health agencies encourage everyone living in the compassionate Copper Country communities to continue dialogue to address these challenges.
