UPHS Portage adds a da Vinci robotic system to the operating room

Technology can make life simpler. From the office at work to the surgical room in a hospital. Recently LifePoint Health made a two million dollar investment into UPHS Portage adding a new robotic assisted surgical system to the facility. A new da Vinci robot to the surgical room. The device allows surgeons precise movement during very complicated surgeries, says Community Health Coordinator Angela Luskin.

Surgeons in the operating room have full control over the da Vinci’s small robotic arms from a command console. The system allows doctors to perform much smaller incisions, leading to less tissue damage during surgery. In September UPHS Portage started with two surgeons already trained to use the device, and have since used the da Vinci during two surgeries.

“We’ve been using the daVinci robot here at Portage for a few weeks, and they’ve been going well. We’re able to do abdominal and gynecological surgeries, including hysterectomies, treatment of endometriosis and uterine fibroids, gallbladder removal, appendix removal, and hernia repair.”– Angela Luskin, Community Health Coordinator, UPHS Portage

Tomorrow night UPHS Portage invites the community to meet Dr. Evon Schexnaydre, MD and Dr. Timothy Sears, MD, and see the da Vinci robotic system in person. Luskin adds that the event will offer a great opportunity to speak with surgeons about various procedures. The hospital’s Meet the Robot event will begin at 5 pm.
