10 Named to MTU Athletic Hall of Fame – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…

  • Houghton blanked Ishpeming 3-0.
  • Hancock skunked Negaunee 3-0.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Chassell 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-22). Cleo Milkey lead the Lakes with nine kills and nine digs. Isabella Tampas had 12 assists. Emily Burnham had four kills and five blocks. For the Panthers, Oriana Olson had eight kills, two aces and four digs. Elli Kuntze had seven kills, one ace, and seven digs. Paige Danisin had two kills and four aces. Sylvia Aho had 17 assists and one ace. 
  • Ewen-Trout Creek dispatched Ontonagon 3-1.

On tonight’s volleyball schedule…

  • Calumet travels to Kingsford, with coverage beginning around 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
  • Dollar Bay-Tamarack City welcomes Ontonagon.
  • Jeffers hosts Ironwood.
  • Chassell entertains Watersmeet.

Calumet and Hancock will be among the teams competing in a cross country meet at Negaunee this afternoon.

Former Houghton High School ski coach Brian Henderson will be inducted into the Michigan High School Ski Coach’s Association Hall of Fame. Over 20 years as head coach, Henderson led the Gremlins to two state championships, five state runner-up finishes, and five regional championships.  

MTU

Ten new members will join the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame. The class of 2024 includes former football standouts Tim Bedenis and Tom VanWagner, former men’s basketball player Ali Haidar, former hockey players Shawn Harrison and John Scott, former volleyball player Jennifer (Jung) Lucas, former women’s basketball player and assistant coach Sarah (Stream) Stanek, longtime Huskies broadcaster and PA announcer Mitch Lake, former Michigan Tech President Glenn Mroz, and former Associate Athletic Director Dave Nordstrom.

The new inductees will be enshrined at a ceremony on campus on October 25th. They will also be honored on October 26th when the football Huskies host Northern Michigan for the Miner’s Cup game, and the hockey team hosts Clarkson.

MLB

The Tigers open the playoffs this afternoon at Houston. Tarik Skubal will start against Framber Valdez. Coverage will begin at 2:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers host the Mets in their opening-round series. First pitch is set for 5:30 this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Luis Severino. Outfielder Sal Frelick, who bruised a hip in a collision with an outfield wall Friday, says he’ll be ready to return for the game. Playoff rosters will be released this morning.

NHL

In preseason play last evening, half of the Red Wings lost to the Penguins 5-1. Lucas Raymond scored Detroit’s only goal. Sebastian Cossa and Cam Talbot split time in net. The other half of the Wings fell to the Sabers 4-3 in overtime. Detroit’s goals came from Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, Elmer Soderblum and William Lagesson. Alex Lyon and Jack Campbell split time in goal.

All of the Wings will host the Penguins again tonight. Listen for regular-season Wings games on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

Jared Goff set a new NFL mark for excellence, as the Lions outscored the Seahawks 42-29. Goff completed all 18 of his pass attempts, blowing past the previous mark of 10-for-10 set by Kurt Warner. He amassed 292 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught the first touchdown pass of his career, grabbing a seven-yard toss from Amon-Ra St. Brown on a trick play. Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 78 yards and two touchdowns.

The Titans stifled the Dolphins 31-12.
