Escanaba Man Found Guilty Of Murder

An Escanaba man accused of killing his estranged wife at her home last September was found guilty Wednesday of first degree murder.

37-year-old Kallay Batchelor had no reaction as the guilty verdict was read in Delta County Circuit Court. Family members of 32-year-old Heather Batchelor gasped and wept.

During the five day trial, the prosecution provided evidence that Kallay Batchelor went to Heather’s home in Escanaba about 2 a.m. on September 3 and stabbed her three times.

The knife broke when it became lodged in her throat.

She was found in her bedroom about an hour later by her 5 year-old daughter.

Text messages between Kallay and Heather leading up to the murder were used to show that she was trying to end their marriage while he was still trying to keep it going.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 1. Batchelor faces up to life in prison.
