Obituary: Arthur M. Engel

Arthur “Artie” Engel, age 81 of L’Anse, MI passed away Friday, September 27, 2024 at Iron River Care Center, Iron River, MI.  He was born in Davenport, Iowa on November 12, 1942.  Artie graduated from L’Anse High School in 1960.  After graduating he took over his dad’s business of Specialty Sales from 1965 until 2014. In 1965, Artie married the love of his life, Janet (LaBeau) in L’Anse. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and great memories.

Artie is survived by his loving family; children Jean Engel of California and John Engel of Las Vegas, grandchildren Olivia and Dalton Porth, and Kayelyn, Braxton, and Jaden Engel, sister Mary (David) Hutula of Pittsburg, and his sister-in-law Kathy Engel of Greenville, MI.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Janet, and his brother Paul.
 
Artie loved sports!   He coached JV Football, Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball for L’Anse Area School. He had also coached football and basketball with his son, John in Las Vegas.  He would often be seen sporting something to support L’Anse, University of Michigan, or the Green Bay Packers. Artie wanted to thank all the kids he had the privilege to coach. He enjoyed working with them and had thought they were all hard-working kids
 
His family, he found great pride and joy in their success.  He would often travel downstate or to Las Vegas to watch his grandchildren’s sporting events and other activities.
 
Artie loved games; particularly cards and cribbage.  He taught his family members to play many games, and playing them became a tradition during holidays and each visit. 
 
A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2024 from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.
at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse.  Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. with Father Jins Joseph officiating.  Immediately following the funeral service, friends are invited to join the family at the L’Anse American Legion Post #144 for fellowship and a brunch.
 
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to the L’Anse Area School District Athletic Department to help with the purchase of a digital scoreboard for the gym.
 
Please honor Artie by wearing your Packer, University of Michigan, or L’Anse gear to the service.
