Parade of Nations celebrates international students and diversity at Michigan Technological University

Michigan Technological University students and the Copper Country’s residents joined to celebrate diverse cultures coming to the Upper Peninsula. The 35th annual Parade of Nations started with The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community leading the parade from campus to Downtown Houghton. Several students wore traditional clothing from countries such as Palestine, India, and Bangladesh. While other countries included parade items like Vietnam’s dragon or Scotland carrying bagpipes. Mackenzie Miller from Calumet says that it’s great to see so many cultures come together for some fun and food.

I think that my favorite part was the parade. It was cool to see all the different cultures from Tech’s campus and then go in to see the local Native American tribe dance and see all the different foods that you could try. – Mackenzie Miller, Calumet.

After the parade turned toward the Dee Stadium, lines began to form at various student group tables serving international dishes. Hundreds of students and residents enjoyed music from the Michigan Tech Pep Band as the multicultural festival started. Then turned my eyes toward the main stage where KBIC started some of the festival’s entertainment.
