Houghton Football Shuts Down Hancock – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football last night…

  • Houghton downed Hancock 38-16, in the first of two planned meetings between the teams this fall. This game served as the official WestPAC league contest. The traditional Copper Bowl game will be played at Hancock October 25th.
  • Negaunee spoiled Calumet’s homecoming with a 29-0 victory. The Miners led 8-0 at halftime. Weston Yesney ran for three touchdowns. Ty Jacobson threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Ian Engstrom. Hear the replay of the game here.
  • L’Anse lost at Gwinn 33-6.
  • Ontonagon outscored Newberry 46-40.

Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts North Dickinson today. Kickoff is at 1:30 at Warner Field.

In high school volleyball today…

  • Calumet competes at the Ashwaubenon Invitational.
  • Hancock plays at The Rock Invitational at Gladstone.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, L’Anse, Baraga and Ontonagon will compete at the Baraga Invitational.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team entertains Hillsdale today. Kickoff is at noon at Kearly Stadium.

The Northern football squad plays at Wisconsin-LaCrosse today.

College Soccer

The Northern Michigan University men’s soccer team hosts Thomas More today.

The Northern women’s soccer team plays at Northwood.

College Volleyball

At the UP North Tournament being held at Michigan Tech yesterday… 

The Huskies dropped both of their contests – 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-19) to 14th-ranked Minnesota Duluth, and 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-17) to Findlay. Meg Raabe led Tech with 10 kills in the first match, and eight in the second.

Northern Michigan dropped a 3-1 (15-25, 18-25, 28-26, 16-25) decision to Minnesota Duluth.

In yesterday’s other contest, St. Cloud State defeated Findlay 3-1 (25-12, 25-10, 23-25, 26-24).

The tourney wraps up today:
• 10 a.m. – St. Cloud State vs. Northern Michigan
• 12:30 p.m. – Minnesota Duluth vs. Findlay
• 3 p.m. – St. Cloud State vs. Michigan Tech

MLB

The Tigers held the Orioles to just one late hit in a 1-0 victory last evening. Beau Brieske opened. Brant Hurter relieved him in the second inning, pitched no-hit ball through the seventh, and got the win. Brent Hanifee turned in a perfect eighth inning. Tyler Holton allowed Baltimore’s only hit with two outs in the ninth, but closed out the game and earned the save. Kerry Carpenter’s first-inning homer provided the game’s only run.

The Tigers entertain the Orioles again tonight. Corbin Burnes will start for Baltimore. Detroit has not named a starter. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit is now two-and-a-half games behind Minnesota in the race for the final American League wild card playoff position, with 14 games remaining. 

The Brewers shaded the Diamondbacks 2-1 last evening. Freddy Peralta gave up a run in the first, and went on to complete five innings. Four relievers allowed no hits over the final four frames. Rhys Hoskins’ two-run homer in the fourth inning was the winning blow.

The Brewers visit the Diamondbacks again tonight. Tobias Myers will pitch against Brandon Pfaadt.

Milwaukee holds a 10-game lead over the Cubs atop the National League Central Division, with 15 games remaining.

NFL

The Lions host the Buccaneers in a 1:00 game tomorrow on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers welcome the Colts for a 1:00 contest tomorrow. Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love is listed as questionable for the game. He did not practice this week, after injuring a knee in last week’s contest. Malik Willis will start if Love isn’t cleared.
