The Parade of Nations Multicultural Festival Brings the World to Dee Stadium

The Parade of Nations brings together cultures from all over the world in one place. The Dee Stadium in Houghton. Michigan Technological University’s international reach has brought to the Keweenaw Peninsula many families, professionals, and students to the region. And each year the university starts the school by highlighting the region’s diverse history and communities. One of the best ways to bring people together says Parade of Nations coordinator Mariana Nakashima, happens through food.

We share our foods and our culture by having entertainment. And I think that that’s a very basic human need to connect. And by doing that, I feel like we nourish not just the body, but also our spirits, I guess. Like the sharing of our foods is a great way to share our culture and welcome each other.” – Mariana Nakashima, Parade of Nations Coordinator, Michigan Technological University.

The Parade of Nations will return to the copper country on September 21st. The Parade will begin at 11am, and the multicultural festival will start at 12 pm. This year’s event will take a different route than in years past. The parade starts on Michigan Tech’s campus, then travels through downtown Houghton, ending at Dee Stadium. There attendees can fill their bellies with delicious international dishes cooked by international student groups.
