High School

In high school boys soccer Saturday…

  • Houghton blanked Escanaba 4-0. Ethan Heckel scored twice, and Josh Bennett and Oliver Pap each found the net once. Jonah Falker earned the shut out in goal. 

In high school volleyball Saturday, Jeffers finished 3-2 at the Battle of the Bay tournament at Ashland. The Jets fell to Rhinelander 2-1 (25-19, 21-25, 14-16) and Northland Pines 2-1 (25-18, 17-25, 11-14). They defeated Wakefield-Marenisco 2-0 (25-17, 25-11), Ironwood 2-0 (25-21, 25-18), and Ashland 2-1 (25-23, 23-25, 16-14).

College Soccer

The MTU soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 1-0 victory at Minnesota Duluth Saturday. Julia Pietila scored the game’s only goal. Bri Barrows got the win in net.

The Northern women’s soccer team fell 2-1 at Saint Cloud State.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team concluded a sweep at the Oredigger Classic in Golden, Colorado, with two victories Saturday. The Huskies defeated Colorado Mesa 3-1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-23), and the Colorado School of Mines 3-1 (17-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-21). Meg Raabe of the Huskies was named MVP on the All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.6 kills and 4.0 points per set over the weekend. 

The Northern volleyball squad won three of its four games at the Minnesota State tournament at Mankato. Saturday, the Wildcats swept Upper Iowa 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-21), and fell to Minnesota State 3-2 (25-19, 19-25, 25-20, 14-25, 6-15).

MLB

The Tigers shaded the Athletics 2-1 Saturday. Brant Hurter took over from opener Brenan Hanifee with two outs in the first, pitched through the sixth, and gave up a run on four hits. Both of Detroit’s runs came in the top of the seventh inning, on a groundout by Dillon Dingler, and a sacrifice fly by Parker Meadows.

The Tigers visit the Athletics again this afternoon. Detroit has not named a starter. J.T. Ginn will open for Oakland. Coverage will begin at 3:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

Highly-regarded Tigers pitching prospect Jackson Jobe has been moved up to Triple-A Toledo. Jobe went 4-2 with a 1.95 ERA over 16 starts this season at Double-A Erie, 

Willy Adames and Gary Sánchez hit back-to-back homers in the first inning, as the Brewers downed the Rockies 5-2 Saturday. William Contreras also went deep. Tobias Myers struck out 11 over six innings, allowing a run on four hits.

The Brewers host the Rockies again this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Kyle Freeland.

NFL

The Lions open off their NFL campaign tonight at home against the Rams. Kickoff is at 8:20 on 99.3 The Lift.
