High School
In high school football last night…
- Houghton lost 28-8 at Kingsford.
- Calumet downed Westwood 30-14. The Copper Kings built a 14-0 halftime lead with a short touchdown run by Nathan Thyrion, and a 15-yard scoring jaunt by Ben Anderson on a 4th-and-2 play. After Westwood narrowed the gap to 14-8 early in the second half, Trent Halonen scored on runs of 10 and 4 yards. The Patriots added a late scoring touchdown.
- Menominee jumped out to a 51-0 halftime lead, and went on to smother Hancock 63-0.
- L’Anse fell at West Iron County 29-0.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell dropped a 48-22 decision at Munising. Josh Daavettila rushed 32 times for 239 yards, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Brady Axford ran for 92 yards on 15 attempts, and scored one touchdown and a two-point conversion.
- Ontonagon rolled Rapid River 72-22.
In high school volleyball today, Jeffers competes at a tournament at Ashland.
The Houghton boys soccer team hosts Sault Ste. Marie today.
The Hancock softball team will hold a returnables drive today between 9 and noon. Bring your donations to Hancock Bottling, on Birch Street near the Driving Park.
College Soccer
The MTU soccer team plays at Minnesota Duluth today.
The Northern women’s soccer team competes at Saint Cloud State.
College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team won its first two games at the Oredigger Classic in Golden, Colorado yesterday. The Huskies swept 13th-ranked Regis 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-23), and outscored Gannon 3-1 (25-10, 26-24, 24-26, and 25-17). Today, they’ll take on Colorado Mesa and the Colorado School of Mines.
The Northern volleyball squad is at the Minnesota State tournament at Mankato. They blanked Minnesota State Moorhead 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-15), and then got past Truman State 3-2 (25-20, 25-22, 14-25, 25-27, 15-13). Today, they’ll take on Upper Iowa and Minnesota State.
MLB
The Tigers fell to the Athletics 7-6 in 13 innings last night. The game was tied 2-2 after nine innings. Each team scored once in the 10th, twice in the 11th, and once in the 12th. Detroit failed to score in the top of the 13th, and Seth Brown’s single off Beau Brieske in the bottom of the inning ended the game. Tarik Skubal worked into the sixth, gave up nine hits, but allowed just two runs. Riley Greene had four hits and drove in two runs.
The Tigers visit the Athletics again this afternoon. Brant Hurter will start against Brady Basso. Coverage will begin at 3:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers fell 3-2 to the Rockies. Frankie Montas gave up just two hits over six innings, but one was a three-run homer by Michael Toglia. Milwaukee batters collected just four hits.
The Brewers host the Rockies again tonight. Tobia Myers will pitch against Ty Blach.
NFL
The Packers began their NFL season with a 34-29 loss to the Eagles in São Paulo, Brazil last night. Jordan Love passed for 260 yards and two touchdowns, but had to be helped off the field when he was hurt with six seconds remaining. There’s no word as to how serious the injury is.
The Lions kick off their campaign tomorrow night at home against the Rams. Kickoff is at 8:20 on 99.3 The Lift.
