CALUMET – Francis John Kump, 87, a resident of Calumet, passed away peacefully at Gardenview Assisted Living with his family by his side after a brief battle with Mesothelioma on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.
He was born on December 19, 1936, in Raymbaultown, the son of Rudolph and Mary (Elenich) Kump.
He attended Sacred Heart Grade School and was a member of the Sacred Heart High School Class of 1954. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and served in Maryland for two years before returning to Calumet to work as the Assistant Manager of Quality Grocery Store in Laurium and later the CLK School District as a bus driver and janitor. He also enjoyed working with his brother, Rudy Kump, on various construction projects.
On August 14, 1965, he was united in marriage to Mary Collins at St. Joseph’s Church in Calumet.
He enjoyed keeping busy with projects around the house and garden, 4-wheeling and Sunday drives in the Keweenaw, picking apples and blueberries, making homemade wine and raspberry jam, collecting mining antiques, golfing, cross country skiing, metal detecting, meeting friends for coffee and spending time with his family. He was a eucharistic minister at St. Paul’s, member of the Knights of Columbus and member of The Foresters.
He is survived by his three daughters, Joan (Bill) Darnell of Calumet and their children, Valerie (Scott) Fisher, Allison (Luke) Baranowski, Rachel, Billy, and Juliana; Natalie (Chuck) Kaschalk of Royal Oak; and Mary Kay Bradford of Greendale, Wisconsin and her sons, Travis and Tyler. He was blessed with his great granddaughter, Aria, who brought him much joy in the past year. He is also survived by his brother Ed (Marlene) Kump of Sarasota, Florida, and sister Jane (Joe) Warren of North Oaks, Minnesota, sisters-in-law, Barbara (Roger) Heikkila and Nora (Ken) Bastian, both of Laurium, brother-in-law, Ralph Gasperich of Glenshaw, Pennsylvania, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Francis was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, parents, sister, Barbara Gasperich, brothers, Rudy Kump and John Kump, and many aunts and uncles.
Visitation will be held at the Ryan Funeral Home on Friday, August 30, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at St. Paul the Apostle Church at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Gracious Pulimoottil officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the church.
Francis’ daughters would like to thank the amazing team at Gardenview for the wonderful care, friendship and love they gave him during the almost three years he lived there. They are eternally grateful for his Gardenview family. They are also grateful for the loving care he received from Aspirus Hospice in his final days.
