The Tigers won their fifth straight game last night, downing the Angels 6-2. Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter and Jake Rogers homered. Brant Hurter turned in five innings, gave up both Los Angeles runs, and earned the win in what was officially his first career start. The game started nearly three hours late because of rain in Detroit.

The Tigers host the Angels again this evening. Keider Montero will start against Jack Kochanowicz. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Mike Yastrzemski’s two-run homer off Joel Payamps in the top of the seventh inning gave the Giants a 5-4 victory over the Brewers last evening. Jackson Chourio and Willy Adames homered for the Crew.

Those teams play again tonight in Milwaukee. Freddy Peralta will start against Kyle Harrison.

NFL

Hendon Hooker will open the season as the Lions’ backup quarterback. Detroit released the other contender, Nate Sudfeld, yesterday, as they pared the roster to 53 players. Actually, they’re at 52, with reports that they’ll be signing veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick, who was cut by the Broncos.

The Packers have a new backup quarterback. Malik Willis comes in from the Titans vie trade, in exchange for a seventh-round pick in next year’s draft. Green Bay will play the season without running back AJ Dillon and tight end Tyler Davis, who were both placed on injured reserve. Greg Joseph beat out Anders Carlson for the placekicking job.

Former Ewen-Trout Creek and Northern Michigan University standout Jake Witt was among the players waived by the Colts as they trimmed their roster yesterday. Reports from Indianapolis indicate that the team would like to sign him to their practice squad, if he’s not claimed by another organization. Witt missed his rookie season last year because of an injury, after having been taken in the seventh round of the 2023 draft.
