TNC and MDNR Updates the Copper Country with Progress in the Keweenaw Heartlands

The Nature Conservancy will update the Copper Country with its progress in the Keweenaw Heartlands. Tonight TNC and the Michigan DNR will host a public information session to update the public with the Heartlands project. TNC and MDNR have been working on developing a transition for the property into the management of the state resource office and a local public entity. In 2022 the Nature Conservancy completed a purchase of 32,000 acres in Keweenaw County to prevent the undeveloped wilderness from being parceled out into private ownership. The goal of the project is to create a long-term protection plan to maintain the forest’s health as a working forest with natural and cultural features and public access for recreational use. The Keweenaw heartlands have been recognized as a global priority site for its biodiversity and climate resiliency by the Nature Conservancy. Tonight’s meeting with TNC and the Michigan DNR about updates on the Keweenaw Heartlands project will begin at 6:30 p.m. inside the Grant Township hall.
