After being shut out by the Yankees Friday, the Tigers turned the tables Saturday with a 4-0 victory. Spencer Torkelson returned from Toledo, and helped power the win with a double and a triple. Andy Ibáñez drove in two runs with a double. Keider Montero allowed two hits over five innings. New York mounted a late threat with runners at second and third in the ninth inning, but Matt Vierling caught Anthony Volpe’s long fly ball at the fence in left field to end the game.
The Tigers host the Yankees again this evening. Tarik Skubal will start against Marcus Stroman. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
To make room for Torkelson on the roster, Bligh Madris was sent back to the Mud Hens.
Freddy Peralta turned in six strong innings, as the Brewers shaded the Guardians 2-1 Saturday. Peralta gave up Cleveland’s only run on four hits. Gary Sánchez doubled home Brice Turang in the first inning, and William Contreras’ homer in the fourth provided the winning run.
The Brewers host the Guardians again today. Colin Rea will pitch against Ben Lively.
Twilight League
The Copper Country Twilight Baseball League tournament will conclude at the Houghton field today…

NFL
Jake Bates’ 43-yard field goal as time expired gave the Lions a 24-23 exhibition victory over the Chiefs Saturday. Coach Dan Campbell again held out all of his starters. Both backup quarterback candidates fared better than they had in the opener, with Nat Sudfeld completing 14 of 27 passes for 197 yards with a touchdown and one interception, and Hendon Hooker connecting on 12 of 15 for 150 yards.
The Lions conclude their preseason schedule next Saturday, when they host the Steelers. Hear that broadcast, and all of Detroit’s regular-season games, on 99.3 The Lift.
The Packers continue their exhibition campaign tonight at Denver.
