MLB

Javier Baez’ two-run homer in the eighth inning boosted the Tigers past the Mariners 2-1 yesterday afternoon. Seattle’s only score came when Alex Faedo walked in a run in the first inning. Kenta Maeda took over in the second, pitched into the seventh, and gave up the Mariners’ only hit of the afternoon.

The Tigers host the Yankees this evening. Detroit has not named a starter. Gerrit Cole will open for New York. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Two of Detroit’s top young prospects could make their debuts tonight. Jace Jung and Trey Sweeney have been called up from the Mud Hens. Jung is listed as Detroit’s fifth-best prospect. He was drafted as a second baseman, but was shifted to third base this summer in Toledo. Sweeney is the shortstop who was acquired recently from the Dodgers in the Jack Flaherty trade. There’s no word yet as to who will be cut to make room on the roster.

The Brewers scratched out three runs in the bottom of the eighth to down the Dodgers 6-4 yesterday. Homers by Jackson Chourio and William Contreras gave Milwaukee a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Los Angeles chipped away against Tobias Myers, scoring two in the second, one in the third, and taking the lead as Myers left the mound in the sixth.

The Brewers host the Guardians tonight. Aaron Civale will pitch against Gavin Williams.

Milwaukee will finish the season without Christian Yelich. Yelich’s back problems will require surgery, which is planned for today. He should be ready for next season.

Tyler Megill began a rehab assignment with Milwaukee’s High-A Timber Rattlers last night, allowing one hit over a scoreless inning. He’s working his way back from lower back issues. Enoli Paredes is scheduled to begin a similar assignment with the Timber Rattlers today. He’s missed more than a month with a forearm strain.
