Hanka Homestead Finnish Museum Immerses Visitors in the Family’s Daily Life

In 1890 Herman Hanka used the 1862 Homestead Act to build his family’s homestead in the Upper Peninsula. Going on to develop the 40-acre property into a self-reliant place of comfort for the family over many years. Today the property remains in great condition as the Hanka Homestead Finnish Museum. The property immerses visitors in the daily life of the Hanka family allowing people to explore the museum’s milk house, sauna, and the horse and hay barns. Tomorrow the open-air museum will host a Heritage Day including music and dance, a meet and greet with Finnish authors, and skill demonstrations for life on the homestead.
