MLB
Mitch Haniger’s bases-loaded double in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Mariners to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over the Tigers last night. The two-out blow off Will Vest spoiled an otherwise stellar bullpen night for Detroit, in which Brenan Hanifee, Bryan Sammons and Tyler Holton allowed just one run on three hits through the first eight innings. All of Detroit’s runs came in the fifth, on doubles by Parker Meadows and Zach McKinstry.
The Tigers open a series at San Francisco tonight. With only two healthy starters, Detroit will likely employ another bullpen night. Former Tiger Robbie Ray will counter for the Giants. Coverage will begin at 9:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
Javier Báez was a late scratch before last night’s game because of neck soreness. Matt Vierling left the contest in the eighth inning with back spasms. Both are considered to be day-to-day.
Casey Mize made his first rehab start for Toledo last night, pitching into the third inning, and allowing no runs on three hits. He’s not eligible to return from the 60-day injured list until the end of the month.
The Brewers routed the Braves 16-7 yesterday. After pounding out 16 hits in each of their previous two games, the Crew turned in 20 yesterday, including two homers by Jackson Chourio, and one each for William Contreras, Garrett Mitchell, Willy Adames and Jake Bauers. Chourio had four hits, and became the youngest Milwaukee player ever to hit two round-trippers in one game. The previous record-holder was Hank Aaron.
The Brewers host the Reds this evening. Aaron Civale will start against Carson Spiers.
NFL
The Lions’ offense sputtered in a 14-3 loss to the Giants in their pre-season opener last evening. With virtually all of the regulars on the bench, Nate Sudfeld and Hendon Hooker combined to complete 18 of 33 passes for just 132 yards. Hooker was forced from the game after suffering a concussion.
The Packers open their exhibition campaign tomorrow afternoon at Cleveland.
College Hockey
Former Michigan Tech hockey coach Mike Sertich has died. Sertich spent 18 seasons as head coach at Minnesota-Duluth, and led them to the national championship game in 1984. He took over the Huskies’ program at a low point in 2000. Over three seasons, he compiled a record of 25–69–9, but was credited with starting to turn around the attitude of the program, which led to more successful seasons shortly thereafter. Mike Sertich was 77, and had been battling pancreatic cancer.
High School
The Lake Linden-Hubbell High School volleyball team will hold a car wash, bake sale and returnables collection drive at the school today from 4 until 7. Everything is by donation, and all proceeds support the team.
Youth Basketball
A new basketball program for kids will be launched this fall in the Copper Country. The Keweenaw Youth Basketball League will be hosted by the CLK schools, but will be open to all area kids from Junior Kindergarten through 6th grade. The six-week term will start at the beginning of the school year. Sponsorship by the Keweenaw Health Foundation will help moderate the cost to make it affordable to as many families as possible.
