M.J. Melendez’ three run homer off Shelby Miller with two outs In the top of the ninth lifted the Royals to a 3-2 victory over the Tigers yesterday. Detroit had built an early lead, with a second-inning RBI single from Gio Urshela, and a fifth-inning sacrifice fly by Matt Vierling. On a bullpen day, four Detroit relievers held Kansas City batters to just five hits over eight innings, including three shutout frames by Brant Hurter in his major league debut.
The Tigers head west today, and open a series at Seattle tomorrow night. Keider Montero will start against Luis Castillo. Coverage will begin at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers’ late comeback fell short in a 4-3 loss to the Nationals yesterday. Starter Tobias Myers gave up just one run over five innings, but Washington scored three times in the sixth, when James Wood laced a bases-loaded triple off Hoby Milner. The Crew plated three in the eighth, with help from a two-run Gary Sánchez homer, but couldn’t close the gap.
The Brewers also have today off, and begin a series at Atlanta tomorrow night. Colin Rae will start against Chris Sale.

Triathlon
At Saturday’s Verna Mize Triathlon…
• In the main event, Nick Peterson finished first, followed by Greg Ballen and Brad Skillicorn.
• In the mini event, Mark Karppinen took the title, followed by Anderson Limkemann and Caleb Gregoire.
• The team title went to Chris Raasio, Dabba Holmes, and Collin Rassio. Katherine Jarvey, Ross Johanning-Smeifr, and Ceci Arce took second place, with Danielle Cass, Ryan Cass, and Diane Heisller third.
• In the youth competition, Lucia Cass claimed first place, followed by Andrew DuLong and Jonah Falker.
