Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Praise State Funds Supporting the Lodge of Hope Shelter

Sault Ste. Marie Tribe leaders praise the state’s recently passed budget that includes funds earmarked to address unhoused challenges. The challenges exasperated by homelessness can make it difficult for individuals to find the right resources. The Michigan state budget contains 1.25 million dollars earmarked for the Lodge of Hope Shelter. The funding will include 500,000 dollars from the Department of Health and Human Services and another 750,000 dollars from the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. The Lodge of Hope Shelter opened in 2023 with 21 rooms. The facility operates as the second homeless shelter in the Upper Peninsula. Sault Ste Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Chairman Austin Lowes praised the funding and state’s recognition to support the tribe’s effort to address homelessness. Lowes says that the shelter offers space for people to seek refuge and help from the tribe with wraparound services. Personally thanking state Senator John Damoose for his work on legislation for the funding and ensuring its inclusion in the budget.
