Verna Mize Triathlon Continues to Grow Participation with Team and Mini Options

Several running events around the Upper Peninsula bring in a lot of people. But not many events can have quite the connection the Verna Mize Triathlon does. Named for Verna Mize, one of the three events in the triathlon has participants swim in the same waters she worked to preserve. As well as running a biking section along the Keweenaw Waterway. Lead organizer Mary Kaminski says that now entering into the event’s fourth year it’s been great to see participants build their community.

She did it when she was nine and this year will be her third year at 10 years old. She’s already registered, Avery Roberts. It’s just wonderful to see all ages involved and everybody hears my lecture at the end about Verna Mize and what she did and how we all need to respect Verna and certainly respect Lake Superior. – Mary Kaminski, Lead Organizer, Verna Mize Triathlon

Kaminski knows that some are intimidated by the thought of preparing for a triathlon. But the event runs a full triathlon and a minimized for a shorter version. It also promotes participants creating teams to complete the race.

You know recruited a good swimmer and a good biker and certainly a good runner and you mentioned last year yes a group of boys from Houghton High School came in first in the team event and a group of girls from Houghton High School came in second so that was pretty amazing yeah they went one-two I thought that was wonderful. – Mary Kaminski, Lead Organizer, Verna Mize Triathlon

The Verna Mize Triathlon takes off this Saturday. People interested in registering for the race can find a signup form online at Keweenaw report dot com. The triathlon also includes a low-cost entry fee, costing an individual 5 dollars to register. Participants for the Verna mize triathlon will meet at Kestner Waterfront Park for registration at 7 am. The first wave will take off at 8 am. Find more information here. Find registration information here.
