High School
Former Finlandia University volleyball coach Brian Lamppa will take over the varsity team at Hancock High School. He replaces Kristan Coleman, who is retiring from the position. Lamppa is a Lake Linden native, whose resume includes experience at many levels of play, across the country.
Fast Pitch Softball
The championship match is set in the Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League tournament. Last night…
• Gold Standard defeated Superior Service 10-4 in a play-in contest. Emily Jokela was the winning pitcher. Payton Goldsworthy had a double and three singles for Gold Standard, and Kara Kinnunen and Sarah Audette each had two singles.
• JB’s Sales and Service then eliminated Gold Standard 9-7 in a semifinal game. Lucy Biekkola was the winning pitcher. For JB’s, Sadie Biekkola had a double and a single and Stella Soumis had two singles. For Gold Standard, Payton Goldsworthy had two doubles.
• In last night’s other semifinal, Tervo Agency defeated Superior National Bank 7-6. Olivia Wakeham was the winning pitcher. For Tervo, Alana Nolan had two singles and Mel Baker had a double. For Superior National Bank, Meg Ruohonen had a home run and a single.
Tervo Agency and JB’s will play for the title tomorrow at 7:00 at the Bone Yard in Lake Linden. Coverage will begin around 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

MLB
The Tigers fell behind early, and dropped an 8-4 decision to the Guardians last night. With trade rumors swirling around him, starter Jack Flaherty was scratched. Beau Brieske opened the game on the mound, but didn’t make it through the first inning, as Cleveland scored three times. Newly-called-up Bryan Sammons took over, pitched through the eighth inning, and gave up five runs. Detroit got on the board in the seventh, when Dillon Dingler stroked his first major league hit – a double that plated Mark Canha. Wenceel Pérez hit a two-run homer in the ninth.
The Tigers host the Guardians again this afternoon. Detroit will probably employ another bullpen game. Gavin Williams will start for Cleveland. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit made a number of roster moves yesterday. To make room for Sammons on the roster, pitcher Easton Lucas was returned to Toledo. Dingler was called up, following the trade of Carson Kelly. Ryan Kreidler was also brought back from the Mud Hens to fill in for Javier Báez, who has left the team to deal with a family situation. Casey Mize has been transferred to the 60-day injured list, as he continues to deal with a hamstring strain.
The Tigers also purchased the contract of reliever Ricky Vanasco from the Dodgers. He’s been assigned to Toledo.
The MLB trade deadline is this afternoon at 6:00. Flaherty and Canha are considered good trade possibilities. Tarik Skubal’s name has also been mentioned, but a trade is considered unlikely.
The Brewers bounced the Braves 8-3 last evening. Rhys Hoskins, Willy Adames and Jackson Chourio homered.
The Brewers welcome the Braves again this evening. Milwaukee has not named a starter. Bryce Elder will open for Atlanta.
The Brewers have apparently added another starting pitcher to their roster. Reports say they’ve obtained Frankie Montas from the Reds. Cincinnati gets long reliever Jakob Junis and outfielder Joey Wiemer. Montas missed most of last season with a shoulder injury. For the Reds this season, he made 19 starts, with a record of 4-8, and a 5.01 ERA.

• Calumet Electronics downed Maple Leaf 7-2.
• Calumet One outscored Dreamland One 6-3.
• Mohawk Superette got past L and L 6-3.
• Harter’s Party Store shut down Ahmeek Fire Department 8-1.
• Luigis Bar edged Houghton Building Supply 5-4.
• Eva’s Hideaway stopped Bucko’s Party Store 8-1.
Harter’s claims the regular-season title, with a five-win margin over runner-up Dreamland One. The playoffs begin next Monday.
