Obituary: Laila R. Hauswirth

Laila R. Hauswirth, 104, a former resident of Hancock and the Bluff Senior Living Community in Houghton, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2024, at Portage Pointe in Hancock where she had been a resident patient.

Laila was born on January 21, 1920, the youngest of eight children to Frank and Susanna (Ojanpera) Isolampi in Hancock, MI.

She graduated from Hancock Central High School in 1939 and was valedictorian of her class.

Laila began her working career at D&N Bank home office in Hancock in 1941. She worked there for 40 years having served in most departments before retiring as legal assistant. At the time she was considered D&N’s resident expert for residential deeds, abstracts, and foreclosures.

She was a member of Gloria Day Lutheran Church, Alfred Erickson Post #186 American Legion of Hancock Auxiliary, and the XYZ senior citizens club. She also became a member of the National Association of Legal Assistants.

In her younger years, she enjoyed reading, music, sewing, going out to eat, and socializing with friends and family. She loved to travel and made many bus trips across the country and also visited Finland twice.

She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and was very proud of her two grandsons, Ryan and Jeffrey.

Laila married Karl Finni in 1946. He developed multiple sclerosis early in their marriage. He died in 1963. Laila then married Louis Hauswirth in 1964. He preceded her in death in 2006. Also preceding her in death were her brothers Armas, Frank, Wilho, and Sulho; her sisters Aunie (Uitti), Aili (Tormala), and Lily (Tormala). She is survived by her son Karl (Dan), daughter-in-law Kathy (Metsa), grandsons Ryan (Sarah) of Winfield, Illinois, and Jeffrey (Elizabeth) of Evanston, Illinois. Also surviving are nieces Mary Lee Nordstrom of Chassell and Sondra (Perry) Shulstad of Iron Mountain, and Luan Uitti of Southfield; nephews Paul (Carolyn) Tormala of Chassell, Ken (Susie) Tormala of Bath, MI, Howard (Mona) Tormala of West Lake, Ohio, Dennis Uitti of Troy, and Jerry (Connie) Pekkala of Dollar Bay.

A memorial service for Laila will be held 11:00 am Friday, August 2, 2024, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock with Rev. Brahm Semmler Smith to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock.

Friends may call on Friday, August 2, 2024, from 10 am until time of services at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
