A recent Jeffers High School Graduate and former CTE Health Care Student shines bright at the International Leadership Conference in Houston. The Copper Country Intermediate School District proudly announces that Carmyn Heltunen represented the district at the prestigious International Leadership Conference in Houston Texas last month. Heltunen qualified for the ILC after placing third at the State Leadership Conference in April showcasing skills and dedication to health sciences. From among the group of 10,000 students from around the globe, Heltunen earned a 2000-dollar HOSA Scholarship and was honored during the conference. Heltunen began exploring health sciences as a career choice while attending the CCISD CTE Health Careers program as a junior and senior, earning certifications as a Phlebotomy Technician, and passing the National Healthcareer Association exam. She also completed over 100 hours of job shadow observation in UPHS portage’s lab. In the Fall she plans to continue her healthcare education journey at Michigan Technological University’s Medical Science Lab. Heltunen’s travel to the International Leadership Conference was sponsored by UPHS Portage, Copper Country HOSA, and the Copper Country Intermediate School District.
